Batesburg-Leesville Elementary School students were delighted to have Mrs. Fran Hawk, author of The Story of the H.L.Hunley and Queenie’s Coin, visit our school on November 6. Mrs. Hawk talked with third and fourth graders about the steps she took in writing her book. She explained to them that they followed the same process when they did a paper for school. Mrs. Hawk let the students know that they were capable of writing a book, also.

The students enjoyed a PowerPoint presentation that told the story of the H.L. Hunley. Mrs. Hawk shared with students replicas of Queenie’s Coin which was found inside the H.L. Hunley when it was brought up from the bottom of the Charleston Harbor. The coin had been in the pocket of Lt. George Dixon. Queenie had given it to him in 1862 and he carried it all through the Civil War.
